Musical interlude

When it comes to music, I’m a total lesbian. I like boys, sure, they’re nice and fun to play with, but deep down, my heart belongs to chicks. Specifically, sweet, folksy ones who sing about stumbling through life and enjoying the view and all that pretty nonsense. Here are some artists you should check out if you need an instant mood lift. Don’t we all?

Priscilla Ahn: Her angelic voice takes me back to my childhood. Also, I met her in real life and she’s pretty much the cutest thing on the planet.

Lenka: My dad of all people recently turned me on to her. Now I can’t stop listening to this song. It makes me want to skip. (Find her real music video on YouTube or on her site. You’re not allowed to embed it.)

Meiko: Have been obsessed with her ever since I accidentally caught the last bit of her show at the Hotel Cafe in LA. I would want this to be my future wedding slide show song, except that it has the word “shitty” in it.

What songs/artists make you happy?

  1. I think you might like Alela Diane! She has a beautiful voice and her music hits the entire emotional spectrum… check her out. And Yael Naim. And Adele. And Thao. And The Blow.

  2. Did my girlfriend just say she is a lesbian? Hot!

  3. anything by the barefoot truth. it’s a total pick me up.

  4. “When it comes to music, I’m a total lesbian.”

Totally unexpected opening line, but I love it. You couldn’t have worded it any better. :)

You should check out Jaymay. She only has one cd but it’s very folksy and she’s got an amazing voice. Also, Ingrid Michaelson is another really good female artist. She’s brand new to the music scene. They featured her song on Grey’s Anatomy and overnight she went from a noname to a top 40 hits artist. She’s really cute and her music is just lovely.

My personal favorites right now are Joe Purdy, City and Colour, and Ben Harper. I’m on a folk/blues kick right now.

  5. I’m a music nerd but when I need a pick me up, it’s always pop punk. I’m talking old Saves the Day, New Found Glory, Blink 182, The Movielife.

Basically pop punk that I listened to when I was in high school! haha

  6. Ha! I’m diggin’ the Lenka song! I do love me some Jason Mraz…and Cat Powers…

  7. oh, I’m such a music junkie, picking one or two (or ten) would be impossible. But right this second I’m listening to Chris Garneau who I adore. Sort of a male cross between Tori Amos and Regina Spektor.

  8. ‘except it has the word shit in it’

    ha!!!!! cracking up….

  9. Love Lenka too! Check out Rachael Yamagata. You’ll love her.

  10. I’m also a lesbian when it comes to music. Give me chic singers with cool voices over musical boys any day of the week. I love Lenka! :)

  11. I’m in loooove with Ingrid Michaelson. The song ‘Morning Lullabies” is my favorite.

  12. Awesome suggestions!

  13. LOVE that lenka song with every fiber of my being!

haven’t ever listened to the other two sweeties you have posted there, but as soon as i’m on a computer with SPEAKERS GAH, i will:)

also, ingrid michaelson, regina spektor, tristan prettyman, colbie caillat, sara bareilles…

yeah, i like chick music too.

  14. by your standards, i too am a lesbian. but no really. fiest. i know i know, everyone got sick of her iPod song. but check out her first album. its got a good retro vibe to it. regina spektor, nelly mckay is more funny than soothing. and of course, ingrid and even though its country- the wreckers.

  15. Currently, Gin Blossoms and Ben Harper.

  16. I second, Rachael Yamagata and I’m really surprised no one has mentioned the group Lights. Their music was featured on a couple of Old Navy ads. The entire Lights – EP is awesome! Also Nichole Nordeman, Pocketsize, Morningwood and t.A.T.u. are good too.
