Every time you speak her name, does she know how you told me you’d hold me until you died?

In the past few years, I’ve been an extremely late bandwagon-jumper. By the time I realize something is cool, it’s already beyond uncool. I don’t quite know why I’m pathetic like this. It’s not like I don’t want to be part of the Cool Kids Club because I so do. (Where are the applications for that, by the way?) I think I just get a bit overwhelmed in the hype of things. This past month, I’ve been like a deer in headlights that flash the words, “OMG! EDWARD! VAMPIRE LOVE 4EVA!” I’m rather frightened by it all. Hold me.

Anyway, this is all to tell you that I’ve discovered a super awesome new artist you need to hear. Her name is Alanis Morissette.

alanis

OK, OK. Before you think I live on Jupiter or in Wyoming or something, I have reasons for not loving her in the late ’90s when everyone else did. I was a good churchy kid and she sang about things like going down on you in a theater. Also, my freshman English teacher tried teaching us the meaning of irony by dissecting the lyrics of “Ironic.” I didn’t get it. Rain on your wedding day? A traffic jam when you’re already late? These things aren’t really ironic, are they? Mostly just shitty. I didn’t know about this Alanis chick.

Anyway, this weekend, I got to be the singer in Rock Band 2 and picked “You Outta Know” because there are limited song options for girls and this was the only one I kinda knew. Dude. It’s the BEST SONG EVER. I made “the band” (me and Matt) repeat it three times in a row because it’s that good. Singing it makes you feel pissed off and empowered — like a real rock star! Then Matt told me most of her angsty songs are about Uncle Joey on Full House (her ex), which makes it, um, a little less rock star-ish, but whatever. Still love it. Now I totally want to buy Jagged Little Pill and grow my hair long and stare at things with a burning gaze.

Hmm. Maybe if I get really good at the song, there’ll be some vlog action here. Though I’m pretty sure someone will talk me out of it.

P.S. Thanks for the concern in regards to my last post. I got my meds and just as the doctor predicted, I felt much better after the first pill. Drugs rule!

Oh gawd I <3 that album! And I totally did not know that re: Uncle Joey. I can’t decide if that makes it more or less awesome.
    Thought about it: more awesome.

I didn’t like her much when she first came out because I thought I was too cool for school. Now I know almost all the lyrics to her songs, and I can’t help but like them.

“…Before you think I live on Jupiter or in Wyoming or something…”

    LOL!

Breakups should be as memorable as they are devastating. One can only hope to be immortalized in song form like Uncle Joey.

You Outta Know is basically my favorite 90s song. You definitely need to d/l the whole album.

Hah, my English teacher used that song to teach us what is NOT ironic. She hated that song, and dissected it all the hell.

If you find those applications to the Cool Kids Club, definitely let me know. It’s like once I graduated from college I got all kinds of lame. The kind of lame that has me asking my 13 year old cousin “who the hell is that?” during the VMAs. And I was never even a fan of New Kids on the Block so their comeback has done very little for my cool quotient.

I’d like an application too when you get ahold of ‘em.

I tried not to get in the craze but those individuals whom I know with teenage girls got me hooked. Hence, I have an undying love for Edward.

Alanis. Totally iced. I pretended I didn’t like her music. But I secretly did. I haven’t heard a lot of her new album though.

I’ve been an Alanis fan since Jagged Little Pill came out in the 4th grade and I got it for Christmas because my parents didn’t know better. I did not know, however, that she was all angsty because of UNCLE JOEY! Now I’m slightly skeezed out…

Funny you should mention Alanis… I was a big fan of hers for a while, but I stopped listening to her a few years ago, and just gave her music another spin a couple days ago.
