Slow News Day

– I’ve been wanting to explore real L.A. and have been hearing about the “Venice Canals.” Wanting to learn more, I Googled “Venice Canals” and came across the most breathtaking photos I’ve seen. “We have to go here this weekend!” I tell Matt, giddily showing him the images. Um, apparently, I needed to type in “Venice Beach Canals,” which look much less impressive.

– Do you guys know Japanese toothpicks? They’re blunt on one end. Here, let me find a picture.

See?

Well, I always knew you’re supposed to break off the end and use it to rest the pointed tip upon, but Matt would look at me like I’m psycho every time I tried to explain this. He said those indentations are just for decoration. This has been an issue of debate for years.

So last night, I finally Googled it. And look what I found: Everything you’ll ever need to know about toothpicks.

“The modern Japanese toothpick has a single point, with the other end blunt and encircled with grooves that give it a finial-like appearance. The decorated end is also functional—intended to be broken off at one of the grooves and so signal that the toothpick has been used. The broken-off part also serves as a rest to keep the soiled point from touching the table.

So I totally win! That felt good.

– I love Fiber One bars, but they make me awfully gassy. I Googled that, too, and found that there are forums dedicated to this issue.

– I really like Google.

  1. Wow, I never knew that about the toothpicks. Japan comes up with weird and wonderful stuff.

  2. You will love the Venice Canals. They are such a beautiful scene to walk through, if it’s a sunny day! Really makes you think you’re not in the middle of Los Angeles.

  3. venice BEACH canals = still fun if you can get a pair of those horse blinder things, and just look straight ahead. feels JUST like italy.. hah.

good win on the chopsticks. i.. suck at chopsticks.

  4. I love google too. And Venice canals = awesomeness!!

  5. Ok, that Venice thing made me laugh REALLY hard. You are adorbs.

And there are forums dedicated to every issue EVER.

    Thank GOD.

  6. I just went to the Venice Canals in Venice, CA a couple of weeks ago. It is a wonderful not-so-hidden gem in our lovely city! You should go! Just watch out for the duckies and their poop!

  7. I love Google and can’t remember life without it.

If the toothpick question ever comes up on Jeopardy it makes me happy that I can answer it correctly!

  8. Seriously, where would we be without Google? I can almost remember the days when I actually had to trek down to the library to learn something…Painful. Of course, Google is also the reason that 12-year-old kids know how to make bombs and my 6-grade students know more about sex than I do… But, I REALLY hate libraries.

  9. I thought they were for decoration too! Just fancy toothpicks. Go figure the Japanese would make it beautiful and functional. Just like cars.

  10. Woo Woo, so there’s a Kyochon opening up right across the street from Bonchon. There’s so much going on in K-town. I say you fly out to NYC and interview/investigate these phenomenons/events but mainly to visit me. =)

  11. As anyone who never likes to be wrong, I’m going to continue to argue that this is stupid. Who puts down their toothpick? Did the Japanese decide, “Oh man! I’m tired after cleaning my top teeth. I better take a rest now. If only I had a way to set down my toothpick so I could continue using it after…”

  12. i <3 google for the same reasons. i love using it to prove my boyfriend wrong. it is perhaps the best reason for its invention :)

  13. i want to explore la also. i’m game for weekend fun.

  14. I often wonder what the hell I did before Google.

  15. holy shizzam, the toothpick find was totally new to me. 4 gold stars.
