So it may appear that I am milking my five minutes of engagement glory for blog content. Well, you know what?
Uh, chicken butt?
So I’m having a teeny crisis over what to do with my hair. You see, I’ve always had this assumption that pretty brides have long pretty hair so I’ve been trying to grow mine out since September. (Just before Matt proposed! I must have ESPN.)
But now?
I.
Hate.
It.
It’s in that awful in-between stage and it’s driving me a little bonkers. Then awesome blogger Doniree showed a pic of her new ‘do and Twitter kind of imploded with oooohs and I was like, that’s it. THAT’S THE HAIR I WANT. (Doni, I don’t mean to be Creepy Creeperson but I totally printed out your twitpic.)
But can I have short hair at my wedding? Or should I keep growing it out so I can do that elegant low bun thing?
I’m so confused.
Can you help me?
For reference, here are two photos that give you a better idea of what I would look like with long and short hair. For those who don’t know what I look like or have trouble telling Asian girls apart, I’m on the right in the first pic and on the top left in the second pic.
LONG:

My hair would be in a low side bun, so my face would sorta look like this.
SHORT:

Other things to note: My dress is sleek and simple and our wedding is in the forest.
So. Long or short hair? OK, go.

SHORT! When I first met you, I thought your hair was awesome. When you said you wanted to grow it, I was disappointed.
But yeah, like I’ve said before, you can always go mullet! Business in the front, par-tay in the back!
I’ve seen a couple brides rock the really short hair and it looks fantastic. I would vote short w/some volume.
Short! Did you see Katie Holmes on the November ELLE cover? More short-hair-’spiration!
Besides, if anything, you can always do… extensions?
hi michelle! i like short, too. i think it’s more modern and hip and more you. and that girl’s twitpic is totally adorable – i think you could rock it.
You can totally have short bridal hair! And rock a cute little birdcage veil.
:) personally, you look great in both picture! I think short will make you look younger, fun& more confident. but dont forget to volumize it !
aklsjdf omggg you’re getting married?!
whatttttt!!
congrats!! :D :D
I’m gonna go against the grain here and say long. You can do so much more than just a low bun thing with long hair, and depending on how it’s styled it could look like it’s short if that’s what you want to go for with some good bangs and clever layers. Forest scene… I imagine something with really loose waves framing your face.
Michelle, I’ve never been able to understand why women grow out their hair for just one event. If you’re going to hate your hair for the time leading up to your wedding day, then is it worth having it long in those pictures, just to cut it the way you want afterward? If you keep it short now, and love it up until your wedding, I’m sure you’ll be just as happy with your short-hair wedding pictures.
i have seen some INCREDIBLE photos of short haired brides – do some research if you like similar styles of brides with their hair down, go for it especially if you think you’ll be happy with it.
i loathe growing my hair super long and kept my hair at a happy shoulder length so that i could still pull it back for the wedding. If you think you may want to wear it pulled back, talk to your stylist and see how long you need to keep it to have it pulled back if you choose to go that route :)
I was determined to grow my hair out for my wedding. I was not going to cut it no matter what. It. Drove. Me. Nuts. So I cut it. I decided that it’s not worth it to have hair I hate just to have a certain look at my wedding. I’d rather enjoy my hair every day. And it can still be pinned up, so I have options.
You’re beautiful either way, but I really love the short hair!
SAME dilemma. here’s what I’ve thought about so far. short hair on wedding day: I could look like I normally do on the wedding day, cute, fun, but few options, and won’t your hair just blow around if it’s not somehow pulled back no matter how much product? long hair on wedding day: many many options, sleek, romantic, tousled, but 6-9 months of awkward growing out?
I think doing it short would be really nice. However, there are more options with long hair…I’m in the middle of a wedding hair dilemma as well. I have NO CLUE how I want to do mine!
I vote short! If its how you wear your hair normally, why grow it out just for your wedding? You can rock the short hair and it will be fun.
why don’t you try out some extensions to see what long would look like? i really think you could go either way, though – there are so many cute options!
(if you need someone to play with your hair, let me know – my sister does hair in santa monica!)
I’m with Zandria. I think you should be YOU at your wedding. If you currently like your hair short, I would keep it short. Long is more versatile, but you can style short hair to look a little more special than every-day for special events too, so I wouldn’t worry about that. It looks good on you both ways so don’t let that be your deciding factor. If you want to grow out your hair ANYWAY, then by all means do it for your wedding but if that’s the only reason you’re considering growing it out, then I wouldn’t bother.
long!
You look really good either way but I’m with you on the whole pretty-bride-on-wedding-day-spiel. I think you look cute and trendy with short hair but do you want to be cute and trendy when you’re 40? Anyway, hope we don’t confuddle you with all these different opinions and suggestions. Can’t wait til your wedding day! I am invited, aren’t I? AREN’T I?!! ;)
long hair!
I’m going to say long. I just think a low side bun with your dress would be so chic!
i say just do what feels good, and come time for the wedding, make do with what you’ve got. i’ve seen awesome short hair do’s for weddings. of course, if you want to go traditional, it should be longer… you’d look amazing any way, WOO! We better say woo as much as we can before it’s not really your name anymore. haha.
I think long. You’re going to be looking back on your wedding pictures for how many years? I’d vote for something classic vs. trendy in terms of hair. OMG, when I look at my aunt’s teased-and-curled-up-to-there 1980s wedding ‘do…*cringe!*
But! You DO look really good with short hair. :)
I am not a traditionalist when it comes to weddings. I think your hair should speak of you. If you’ve always been a short-haired girl or feel more yourself with short hair, keep your hair short for your wedding! You can still add embellishments (pretty headbands or sparkly barrettes) without losing your personality. Your best bet is to start talking to your hair stylist about ideas of what you can do with shorter hair for the wedding. That way, you won’t hit your wedding week unprepared. Go Woo!
Do whatever you want. Short hair can be elegant/sexy/whatever you’re going for. My hair happens to always be pretty long, so that’s how it is. But I have some bridesmaids growing their’s out for my wedding so they can do something with it. All about preference!
I’ll do a mohawk if you do a mullet.
Awww, I’m so flattered! Not creepy, very sweet! I’m LOVING the short hair, FWIW. Seriously, it’s SO MUCH easier to maintain and it just keeps a better shape than my medium-length hair. Promise you’ll show pics if you do chop it?!
your hair looks super cute short. if you have had the style before and like it, i say go with it. i’ve never had hair above my shoulders (well, maybe when i was 3), so i’m way too scared to go for the short cut. so i vote SHORT!
you can’t see your long hair in the first picture. You SEEM to like short hair better and I would definitely go with whatever you feel most comfortable with and what YOU like the best.
Because when it comes down do it – the wedding day is about YOU. (and Matt). But YOU, so you should be happy with whatever you want it to be.
:)
I love it short! You could always wear it down if it’s short and do a nice curl.
I’m not going to lie: you could totally rock the short hair. I’m kind of in love with it.
No matter what you do, you are going to be a goddess. I can’t waaaaaait to see what you come up with! Eeeee!
(That is my excited squeal. In case you were wondering.)
:)
you can totally rock short hair.
for short haired brides I always recommend doing something vintage like fingerwaves or loose tousled curls. very chic.
I was growing out my hair for about 8 months for my wedding and had planned on doing a loose pulled back look. But then about 5 months before the wedding I just got sick of long hair and cut it all into a bob. What I wound up doing for my wedding was just curling my hair like an old Hollywood movie star. I got so many compliments.
Just sayin…I think you can do it! See my blog for pics.
