We’ve brought up a handful of locales but haven’t given any of them much serious thought. Care to weigh in?
Pristine beaches, vibrant street life and authentic pad thai & pho!

Romance and culture. Ooh la la.

Sensory overload. And lots of cute trinkets to bring back home.

Jazz and spicy crayfish—what more do you need? This one also won’t break the bank.

My most well-traveled friend asked what I wanted to do on my honeymoon. I said “eat and drink.” She said “Buenos Aires.”
Any places to add to the list?

Can I vote for two? My heart says Italy/Spain because … ITALY AND SPAIN. And they have some darn good eats there.
But my head says: eat and drink somewhere where the exchange rate is not whupping the dollah’s ace quite so rigorously. Or not at all, in the case of the N.O.
So three votes, really. I’m pretty much useless for the rest of the decision-making here.
CYPRUSSSSSS.
(Or Greece, at least.)
But for the most economical option that’s also absolutely gorgeous, I’d go with SE Asia. Thailand is fabulous.
If it matters, we’re going to Italy! I think mostly the west coast and Tuscany. Mainly for the food and the views, neither of us can stand hot weather. The annoying thing is that for a European, Italy is not considered that special (what?!) because it’s like just a couple hours away. Hrmph. Anyhoos (anywoos?) I can share our research if you decide go with that.
Of course South East Asia hahaha might be because I live here but beaches in Thailand ( Phuket ) and Bali ( Indonesia ) are awesome and perfect for honeymoon. :D
ps. I always wanna go to French Polynesia for honeymoon, you should check it out too :)
italy and spain!
I am from Buenos Aires and you will be eating and drinking at low cost…. dollar is 3 to 1 our currency
I had two things to work on, the honeymoon and our house. Now you’re trying to take away the honeymoon? Well I say, “No way!” We’re going to South Dakota to shoot buffalo and prairie dogs. It is settled.
if you want to eat and drink, have you considered looking up cruise specials to any of those destinations? because you will TOTALLY get your fill of eating and drinking on a cruise.
and, of course, seeing the sights at your destination ports.
Italy and Spain!!! It just sounds so romantic. Perfect for a honeymoon!
matt – don’t forget hot air balloon rides. i hear those are all the rage in south dakota.
i vote for tokyo because that’s where i wanted to go instead for the belated honeymoon we took in december to kauai (steven’s choice). you guys have to go to japan and eat all the ramen, curry, and sushi you can!!! and bring back the cutest hello kitty stuff, too =)
happy friday, michelle!
I vote for Buenos Aires.
You and MattPoop should go to to Fiji. Or the Cayman Islands – you can open up a bank account there. I have been studying way too much tax the last couple of days. All of our hypos talk about the Cayman Islands and all I can think about is beach not offshore bank account.
I’m going to vote for Buenos Aires because I think South America is fascinating. And my vote for a place not on your list: Hawaii. You could so make it happen. I think it would be more honeymoon oriented than New Orleans and you still wouldn’t have to pull out your passport.
Of the foreign choices, I vote for Buenos Aires because it would involve considerably less jet lag (unless you want to be sleep-deprived — and not in a fun way — on your honeymoon) as you’re crossing fewer time zones.
And like Ally says, South America is cool! The food is great, the handicrafts are great and there’s something about crossing the equator that is exciting.
Or … I can’t remember when your wedding is, but if it’s not too wintry, think about Quebec, too — it’s closer and cheaper, but still tres francais and romantique.
matt and i are hoping for italy, so it would be pretty funny if we both went there since we’ve overlapped on so many other wedding things.
but i would also vote for buenos aires because that just sounds so fun and different from what a lot of people do.
oo! all those sound lovely! we’re going to Mexico – fiances criteria was “tropical, lay around, all inclusive,” so that’s what we’re doing! i’m so looking forward to an absolutely lazy week with sun, sand, all you can eat & drink and just the two of us! good luck in choosing!
If I could be so lucky… I’d choose Italy and Spain! I’d want to go there anyhow… It’s my dream vacation. Plus Greece…I’d really love to visit Greece.
What about China? Squishy balls, boba and beef noodle soup. =) jk, my vote’s for Italy/Spain too.
I think I’d have to vote for either SE Asia or Buenos Aires … both places I’d love to visit (therefore, there might be a little vicarious living through you)! =)
NOLA is fabulous, but I don’t know about a honeymoon there… I vote Italy/Spain. Romantic and amazing and delicious! Oh how I miss them…
(I hear SE Asia is beautiful too, though.)
New Orleans is my personal dream destination, but it doesn’t feel “honeymoon enough” … I’d go with whichever feels most adventurous! Think of it this way: with kids, you could go for a nice vacay down the line, but what wouldn’t you want your kids there for? Joe and I have talked about backpacking through Europe for our honeymoon.
shyam and i did thailand and malaysia for ours, and loved it! plusses include: gorgeous beaches, nice people, massages for $10, delicious, spicy food, and its a true bargain!
Santorini. You’ll never want to leave.
Ooh, Buenos Aires! I would go there in a heartbeat.
Thanks everyone! Such helpful input! I think we’re ruling out Tokyo and New Orleans as they are not really honeymoon spots.
Buenos Aires would be my pick mostly because eating and drinking and sunshine are really all I’d want. Spain and Italy would be amazing, but my ideal honeymoon would be 100% relaxed, without the pressure of ‘ah I’m in Italy and I should really be doing touristy things’. You two will have a blast regardless of where you go though, for sure :)
Knowing you, I’m voting Southeast Asia. I mean, hello, pho?
Also, it would be the perfect mix of relaxing and, you know, doing stuff. Just beach beach beach all day is so boooooooring.
go to thailand! or bali! or brazil :)
