So I learned via Twitter that today is International Badge Day, an “annual event during which sorority women everywhere honor their Greek affiliations by wearing their badge or letters.” I thought I’d take this opportunity to reveal a little something about myself.
I was in a sorority. Well, the proper verbiage is, “I am in a sorority” because SISTERHOOD IS FOREVER! but the latter just sounds like I’m trying to be 21 again, which is totally true, but not something I like to openly admit. I rarely bring up the fact that I’m a sista not because I’m ashamed or anything but just because people might look me up and down and say, “Uhhh … you?” Shut up. So my socks never match and my nail polish is always chipped and I have permanent food stains on my shirts — SO WHAT?
I joined because there was nothing else to do at my school. And ultimately, I loved it. I have to admit, I do have mixed feelings about the whole rush process (I think it makes a lot of girls feel bad about themselves, sadly), but the sorority experience itself enabled me to meet so many amazing people I wouldn’t have met otherwise, a handful of which are my besties today.
More reasons why being in a sorority was/is awesome:
- The songs! Which are even more awesome to sing when you’re drunk at a bar five seven years after graduation.
- Themed parties ALL THE TIME. Kamana Wana Lei Ya (a Hawaiian theme), Mardi Gras and my fave, Playboy (sort of not safe for work?).
- Philanthropic events.
- Naked pillow fights. Just kidding.
To all my fellow Greeks, happy International Badge Day! Pi Beta Phi headquarters, if you are reading this, please don’t disown me!

Haha actually I can tell :D sororities sound so fun too bad we don’t have one over here.
I didn’t know you were Pi Phi — my sis-in-law is, too!
I went through rush and then, on the day before we got our invites, realized that it wasn’t for me and dropped out. But I loved the houses (as in, the actual old buildings), and all the women I know who were in them really enjoyed the experience.
I’m a nerd, so the only Greek letters I ever got to wear were Phi Beta Kappa. :-)
I kind of regret not doing the sorority thing in college, only because we both went to the same school, the school where there was nothing to do unless you were in a sorority or frat. And though I loved the academic experience, most of the time I was just really, really bored and itching to go somewhere else for fun.
So instead, I got married and had a baby. Out of sheer boredom. (Just kidding. Sort of?)
Who wants to know the secret Pi Phi handshake?
Michelle also said that if I do the dishes for the first five years of marriage, she will show me the naked pillow fight pictures. I can’t wait!
we don’t have a handshake m@.
and there are no naked pillow fight pictures. but there are wet tshirt pillow fights. totally different things. and if you cook for michelle, she’ll show you the mudwrestling ones too.
I was also in a sorority at my very big university … and I did it out of curiosity more than anything. But, I DO NOT wear that badge with honor any more than I wear that Resident Adviser badge or Barely Passed Physics badge. It was part of my college career. It was part of who I was in college. I have many treasured friends from that time. But, I do not really consider myself part of that sisterhood any more.
