Today, I am 30. So far, there’ve been no tears or meltdowns or tantrums. Birthday success in my book.
I’m happy and sad about the milestone. Sad because I’ve embraced life as a twenty-something for so long (10 years if you’re counting) and it’s hard to simply shed that phase, that identifier. I’ve been able to blame my bad decisions and confusion about the future on my youth, but all of a sudden, it’s like I’ve run out of excuses. Dammit.
But I’m happy, too. Really happy. I can really picture myself loving my thirties. The decade is about finally knowing what’s right for you, and saying, hey, let’s do that. It’s also about dinner parties, possible family-growing and age-appropriate dresses. And more awesomeness, obvs.
(Do 30-year-olds still say “obvs”?)
Cheers to growing up.
Some tidbits that make me happy:
Martha Stewart didn’t become Martha Stewart, queen hostess with the mostess, until 41.
Julia Child didn’t learn to cook until 37.
At 32, J.K. Rowling was an unknown writer.
At 30, Suze Orman was a waitress.
Lucille Ball was 40 when I Love Lucy hit the air.
30, ready or not, here I come.

Love that list at the end!
You are so gorgeous, Michelle. Happy birthday!
(Also, I totally got the chills when I read ‘family-growing.’ Partially because I love Asian babies and partially because you will love motherhood and be an amazing mom.) (When you’re ready. NOT PRESSURING YOU AT ALL.)
Happy birthday!! Great pic.
Also, I love that the Firefox tab for this post is “30 | Woo!”
You are aging very gracefully, you could be a ‘friends’ star!
I also find a lot of reassurance in knowing that milestones and success continue to happen for people later in life. No matter the age, you will continue to be fabulous!
Love this! I think we (as a society) spend way too much time worrying about growing older, and I think its refreshing to find someone embrace the 30 milestone. Good for you, hey! Happy birthday! :)
love that list! :) happy birthday, woo!
EVERYONE over 40 told me 30′s were the absolute best. I am about to be 31 and while 30 has been a mostly good year, I am somehow having just as hard a time with 31 as I did with 30. So upside: more confident, more comfortable. Downside: Each birthday is a little harder to swallow.
happy happy birthday!!
Happy, happy birthday!!!
WOO! Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday!! And the tidbits at the end really did make me happier about my life HAHA.
Belly B :)
Happy Bday!
Happy Birthday Michelle! What a gorgeous picture! :)
happy birthday michelle!! you make 30 look quite lovely :)
welcome to your 30′s!!! i hit the mid-decade end of this year myself.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Happy Birthday Michelle! And I think you’ve done amazing for the short 30 years. :) Cheers to what’s waiting for you in the next 30!
AWWW.. happy birthday michelle! you make turning 30 easy!
Happy Birthday! You look fantastic. Great list, helps me breath a sigh of relief.
Great post Sis. You’ll always be old in my eyes.
Happy belated birthday! I love this post especially the list at the end, so much to look forward to! I gotta tell ya, so far 30 is my favorite year yet, you are totally going to rock it!
30 looks gooood on you, lady! Seriously. You’re beautiful! This post made me stop and think that I may just be looking forward to turning 30! Everyone makes it seem so daunting but why?? The list you included at the bottom of the post was awesome. To 3o and beyond!
This was a great little message. I’m turning 30 in 2012 and have had a complex reaction to it. Been working on my 30 before 30 list for the past couple months. Lucille Ball was 40!? Never would have known…
First off, Happy Birthday! You will love (and grow into) your 30′s. That’s coming from a 32 y/o mom of 3 who still says “obvs” on occasion and references Apatow movies and the like. My 30′s have brought a lot more confidence in myself and a lot less concern about what others may think & how I am “supposed to be/act”. If you ever get down about getting older, revel your Asian genes and how it makes you look younger ;) that’s what I do lol. And thank you SO much for those stats of fabulous women and how they came into their own in their 30′s. I really needed that.
Happy Birthday! I love your blog!
I love the list at the end! Doesn’t that put so much into perspective? Thank you for that.
And Happy Birthday!!!
