My Inner Artist

I like to think I have an artistic eye, but sadly, I do not have an artistic hand. My drawing capabilities are limited to stick figures, kindergarten landscapes and my name in block letters.

But a savvy new game from Nintendo gives me hope. Art Academy for the DS, DSi and DSi XL helps aspiring Monets (and mindless doodlers like me) develop their talents with step-by-step lessons on techniques such as shading, movement and perspective. It’s an impressive program that makes you feel like you’re working with real art tools — pencils, paints, brushes — sans the drippy mess.

This weekend,  I got to host an Art Academy workshop, sponsored by Nintendo and led by artist Kyle Hollingsworth, owner of Hands on 3rd studio in Los Angeles. We had a cozy little group — it was just me, Matt, Andrea and Justine. (Katelin was sick and couldn’t co-host — so bummed!) It was fun hanging out and creating some digital masterpieces.

What our oranges were supposed to look like:

What mine looked like. A little moldy?

I can’t wait to hone my skills on my upcoming plane ride to Argentina. You can spend hours, days on these projects. When you’re done, you get to “frame” them and display them in your gallery. I feel like an artist already!

Disclosure: Nintendo provided me with a DSi XL and Art Academy game for hosting the event.

Hello Kitty Mania!

This weekend was packed with awesome and I really, really, really, really don’t want it to end. Really.  I have a few picture posts for you, starting with …

Sanrio’s Small Gift Los Angeles!
My inner seven-year-old was unleashed at this cute-overload wonderland set up in celebration of Sanrio’s 50th anniversary. Saturday was the “I Heart Nerds” party, and super coincidentally, I was Hello Kitty in a Hello Kitty nerd tee for Halloween this year. So I re-wore my costume. I was like an ADD-stricken child at this place, making Sanrio sand art and shrinky dinks, playing carnival games and taking pictures with Hello Kitty herself. Grownup Me admired the seriously rad art. So much fun! The event runs through next weekend. Check it out if you’re in town.

The most badass painting ever by Martin Hsu. It’s titled, “Sanrio’s 50th Family Vacation.” Click here to see the enlarged version. Seriously, do it.

Socialite

Oh, this? It’s just me on the LA Times blog. That’s how we roll.

I’ve been pretending to be a socialite with back-to-back nights out — first Blogger Prom, then the Audrey Fashion Show. So much fun but now I’m tired and just want some pizza and my fat pants.

Happy weekend!

Cheers to our little Blogger Prom posse: Matt, Katelin, Nico, Andrea & The Other Matt (my husband).

It’s Prom Night!

Tonight, Matt and I are going to Blogger Prom, which is sort of like real prom without the Olive Garden dinner and awkward sex talk from Mom. I can’t wait to get all dressed up and party with some of my favorite blogger friends!

I wonder if it’ll be anything like this:

Or this:

Or this:

Or maybe this:

Probably not.

What’s your all-time favorite prom scene?

This Weekend in LA: A Terrarium Workshop Hosted By Woo!

Thanks for your sweet comments on Woo! I’m amped about this new venture and I’m so glad you’re here for the ride.

For all of you in LA, here’s a cool event I’m hosting along with my pals Liz, Derek and Janice. This Saturday, learn how to make a modern terrarium with botanica artist Kit Kan of Branch of Life. Even though I have a black thumb (R.I.P. my old roommate’s plant I was supposed to take care of that one week), I’m looking forward to this workshop. I’ve been wanting a cute succulent arrangement for our apartment and now I can create one myself.

Some of Kit’s latest work.

$30 gets you all the materials you need for your mini-ecosystem and some yummy snacks. Email Liz at liz@souliz.com for more details and to RSVP. Hope to see you there!
