Moving up

I don’t know where this surge of motivation is coming from, but it must be squashed — immediately. I am now the managing editor of KoreAm Journal. [Insert nervous laughter here.]

At first, I wasn’t going to go for the job. I never really pictured myself as a manager of anything — peon duties have always been more my style. But then I figured, hey, I’m still young, agile and capable of hard labor (You know, as I’ll have to prance around to all those parties. That’s what magazine editors do all day, right? Wait, no? Huh? WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO?)

I’d be glad to discuss some of the details of this transition over, say, a bottle of vodka. (This is more of a plea than an offer.)

Holiday cheer

As it is now only four days before Christmas, I figure I should write some sort of holiday post. (It’s obligatory, right? A cookie receipe, a photo of some furry critter in a Santa hat — anything!) But to be honest, it hasn’t really felt like Christmas this year. That is because to me, the holidays have always meant sitting around in sweats for a week straight, scarfing down fruitcake that random church people bring my parents, watching hours of Christmas-themed romantic comedies on TBS and just being the happy holiday sloth that I’m meant to be. Last night, I was wondering why I was so frustrated that I have to work up until (and a little bit through) Christmas. I mean, I’ve been out of college for four years. Lots of responsible grown-ups do it. (And don’t whine nearly as much as I do.) Then I realized that this really is the first time I haven’t had a real break. Every year in Arizona, I saved up my vacay days and peaced outta there until the new year. Sigh. Look at me now! A slave, I tell you!

Now that you feel oh-so sorry for me (riiiiight), here are some things that have made my holiday season jollier:

- White elephant/just-plain-random gifts. So fun! So far, I have received: a gold Buddha statue holding a static electricity sphere, a Will Yun Lee ornament and a Dwight Schrute bobblehead (awesome!). I, in return, have gifted: KoreAms autographed by Michelle Woo, a devil paperclip holder (it’s cute) and a hardcover copy of Mao: The True Story.

- Matt gave me my Christmas gift early this year and I love it. Probably because I e-mailed him the link to exactly what I wanted (an alternative down comforter) along with the coupon code. Yeah, we don’t really do surprises anymore. Not after that one year when he gave me a lime green Google bean bag chair and that other year when he gave me a recipe book titled Cook Your Way Into Her Pants.

- “Clash of the Choirs” on NBC. It’s cheesy, but cute. I love holiday choral music!

- Drunkenness at the company Christmas party. Attempting to rehash the memories the next day.

- Borders Rewards coupons

- Cooking. It only happens about once a year.

- Meeting up with friends who are back in town.

- Cute winter-in-SoCal jackets.

Yeah, so I guess my season hasn’t been so bad at all. Merry Christmas everyone!

UPDATE: Matt writes about our holiday festivities.

Another week of madness. While I plow through my closet for suitable Vegas attire (What says RoWr in November?), check out the past two KoreAm cover stories. I’m actually quite fond of them.

(Please excuse the clunky website.)

October: Bobby Hundreds

September: Will Yun Lee

UPDATE: One more. Read about my nipple scrub!

Off to Sin City, bayboi!

On the catwalk

TIP: If you ever feel like you need a quick popularity boost, add your name to the media list for LA Fashion Week. For several days straight, you will get an e-mail every five minutes inviting you to fashion shows, meet-and-greets, after-parties — oh my! It’s so much fun. Yeeeeah, not really. (I get it! You love me! Now, how do I unsubscribe??)

Aside from the inbox flooding, Fashion Week (or, for me, Fashion Day) was indeed so much fun. I got to hang out backstage at the Voom by Joy Han show. It was sheer, awesome chaos. I felt like I was trapped in an episode of Behind the Scenes with Access Hollywood. And yes, despite being a ‘serious journalist,’ I totally hid in the corner and snapped some pics with my point and shoot. Don’t judge me. Blame the reflexes.

The press release promised big stars like Nick Lachey! Jessica Biel! Patrick Dempsey! Sadly, they were nowhere to be found. Instead, I saw …

The guy from Entourage! (No, not the Korean one again.) Dude, I got way close. You can almost see his nose hairs. Go paparazzi Michelle!

Audrey’s Fashion Fusion ’07 (a.k.a. Why My Job Rules)

Audrey magazine’s 2nd annual fashion show took place on Friday night at the Petersen Automotive Museum. As one of L.A.’s ultimate Asian American events, it was filled with Crown Royal cocktails, “up and coming” celebs and hours of shameless picture-taking. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Here’s me with cutie patootie Aaron Yoo of “Disturbia.”

“Survivor” winner Yul Kwon walked down the runway shirtless. Grin. Life is good.

Lorenzo and Matt ran into an old high school buddy: Kev Nish of Far East Movement!

Here’s Audrey and KoreAm publisher James (center) with a cornucopia of Asian celebs (that’s Bai Ling in the big bangs and short skirt).

Me and Alice with “Heroes” sidekick James Kyson Lee.

The hosts of the show, Leonardo Nam (the Asian guy on “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and Lindsay Price (the Asian girl on “90210″).

Rex Lee of “Entourage” struts his stuff on the runway. Work it!

Almost forgot. Clothes were modeled as well.

Me and the Audrey girls.

Having a good time: Viv, Spencer, Mirei and me.

Stories

Two stories by yours truly:

All-American Icon: Discovering the many dimensions of Margaret Cho

Finger Lickin’ Good: Move over, Colonel Sanders. There’s a new type of KFC in town and it ain’t from Kentucky. KoreAm bites into the pipin’ hot trend of Korean fried chicken.

Do they have a patch for this?

I did it.

This morning, I got to work, replied to some e-mails and then relocated my notes, my laptop and myself to the conference room.

I did not bring the ethernet cord.

This is a monumental step for me. For the past many, many months, I have been a slave to the Internet. Namely, Gmail, latimes.com, nytimes.com, washingtonpost.com, azcentral.com, Xanga, michellewoo.com (obviously), blogs of people I know, blogs of people I don’t know, Google (you know, the search engine), the 24 Hour Fitness online class schedule, MySpace and now the bottomless pit of a website they call Facebook (And no, Des, I don’t want to join your Ninja cult!). Yes, I do owe the Internet much praise and gratitude for providing me with life-altering gems such as this, but as a writer who has procrastination tendencies embedded in her neurosystem, it has also been the source of my downfall.

I believe my work has been suffering due to my a-a-addiction (OK, I SAID IT! Now, sit in a circle and clap for me) to the Internet. I mean it’s still awesome (obviously), but I just can’t get in the zone on cue like I used to. I’m constantly distracted (“Hmmmm, maaaaaybe instead of writing, I should refresh Angry Asian Man for any news I might have missed.”) And for someone who aspires to be The Most Famous Michelle Woo In The World, this isn’t OK.

So today I sat in stillness, surrounded only by the motivational Post-It notes I laid out for myself. I did a good amount of writing, even though I kind of took two lunch breaks (We’ll go through the 10-step recovery program for my food addiction next time). For now, I will try to limit my obsessive online behavior. I will check my personal e-mail only 3 to 7 times a day. I will visit Facebook only 2 to 4 times a day. I will not read blogs I know will probably be boring, anyway. I will be strong. I will take back my life.

Starting now. Or maybe tomorrow.

Phew. They’re still there.

A Korean lady scrubbed my nipples!

This weekend was much too eventful for me to describe in detail, so I will leave you with that. More to come once I get over the trauma of being trapped in a room full of middle-aged vee-jay-jays (EEK! MY EYES!)

Happy Labor Day!

I’m kind of a big deal

And just because I haven’t been vain enough lately, I urge y’all to pick up the latest issue of Audrey magazine. Yes, yours truly is the smokin’ model on page — Ha! You really think I memorized the page number? — *cough*twenty-five*cough.* I’m not a huge fan of the outfit (that sheer potato sack is not the most flattering), but heck, I’m in a magazine! It was so much fun trying to get that perfect “my date just stood you up, but I’m way too cool to care” expression. How’d I get to model for Audrey, you ask? Well, you just gotta know the right people. Read: My desk is seven feet away from the editors. (Audrey is also KoreAm’s sister publication.) Perhaps I’ll get to do more stuff like this in the future. ‘Cuz, you know, I have watched nearly every episode of ANTM and practiced extensively in front of the mirror. Watch out, Tyra.

I also wrote a special feature on fake handbags for this issue, so check that out, too.

Baby Elyse Update

It’s been more than a month since this story ran, and since then, there’s been some good news. However, the family is still searching for a bone marrow match, so please register at an upcoming donor drive if you can.
