Gaming Gals

Once in a while, cool stuff happens to me, but this is one of the coolest. Definitely Top 20. It falls somewhere between meeting Mario Lopez and discovering Thin Mints.

A while back, a woman from Nintendo’s marketing company emailed me and asked if I wanted to host a party for all my girlfriends to help get people excited about Nintendo DS Lite. My jaw dropped. I had read about this before on Nothing But Bonfires. I remember sending Matt a link to Holly’s post, along with the message: “Oh my goodness, look what this girl gets to do — just because she’s a blogger. She must be so cool.”

Apparently, the Nintendo people had stumbled upon my site and upon reading it, thought I was a cool blogger, too. You know, the kind of blogger who can be like, “I ate peas today” and then everyone on the internet will go out and stuff their faces with peas and then try to register the domain name michellelikespeas.com. Little did they know, I’m a huge dork. Har-har! Snort!

I was familiar with the Nintendo DS Lite. I had bought Matt one for his birthday once, and from the moment he let me play Super Mario Bros., I was hooked. So hooked that I whined every time he would make me give it back. The sleek little console became the cause of much relationship turmoil, so I was thrilled when I heard I would be getting my very own.

[Random story: In our five years of dating, Matt has never bought me flowers ever. One time, right before I was about to leave for a trip, he called and said he had something to give me. “FLOWERS?!” I asked. “You’ll see,” he said. Suddenly, he walked into my office and handed me his DS Lite so I could play it on the plane. Attached to it was a Post-It with a sketch of a flower. Swoon.]

Anyway, so this party, which happened Saturday night, was amazing. I always get slightly nervous when I mesh together different groups of friends because there’s always that fear that people will be sitting around staring at their Blackberrys and whispering in small groups. (Hey, I’m a girl. I know bitchy.) But there was none of that. Everyone mixed and mingled over cheese, chocolate, wine and champagne. There were laughs, there were squeals, there was even a childhood reunion! No really, there was! Ajna, a friend from my sorority days, and Angie, a friend from my post-college days, reunited right there at the party. I guess they were really close as kids, but had lost touch. Wow! Nintendo brings everyone together! Amazing!

And now, some pics, as gathered from various cameras:

Tree, Desiree, Jess and I get introduced to the DS Lite. While playing this word game on Brain Age 2, Desiree started yelling out the answers when she figured them out. (What a show-off!) The nice Nintendo lady chuckled as she reminded us, “Uh, this is a one-person game.

Carissa, Lauren and Jeanifer. So I don’t know if you can see these, but every girl got a cute little charm bracelet upon arrival. Once you played one of the games — Brain Age 2, Mario Kart, Guitar Hero and some other crossword one — you’d get a charm. And once you got all four charms, you’d win …

A NINTENDO DS!

AND BRAIN AGE 2

Yay! It’s like Christmas! Or Oprah’s Favorite Things!

Everybody say, “We love free stuff!”

Angie and Ajna – reunited! With Nintendo products!

Seriously, this party has spoiled me forever. Everybody has been raving about their DSes and some have even gone out to buy more games. I, for one, may or may not have played it last night in the bathroom. Jenny, Desiree, Carissa, Lauren, Jeanifer and I will be going to Costa Rica in a few months and you can bet there’ll be some Mario Kart action on the plane ride there. I’ll be practicing, girls. You better watch yo backs.

I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to Justine, Brand About Town and Nintendo. This was an incredible experience that I hope many other girls get to enjoy. And thanks to all my wonderful friends who came out and had fun and made me look cool. I love you.

Happy gaming!
